Dhow and Anchor @ Jumeirah Beach Hotel Dubai.
Visiting a restaurant a decade after the last visit gives one an excellent perspective on the changes. The Dhow & Anchor was a popular watering hole back then and one would not necessarily have gone there for a meal. The pub previously, was very dark and dingy.
Glad to see all that has changed with an openness and loads of light and a new feel. More of a pub bistro feel it has the advantage of outside seating with excellent views. The high chair seating, normally a put off for us, were surprisingly comfortable.
The welcome was polite and when we asked to be seated out on the terrace were informed all were booked. The inside seating was nice, (although the table top space was a bit tight for two people, how it would accommodate food and drinks for four is a mystery). The service was slow and prolonged waving of hands finally did get some attention. We noted we were not the only ones with this problem. Considering we saw an abundance of staff around the lack of attention to diners was a bit strange. Interestingly through during our meal and after not one staff member asked us how was the food was or would we want anything else.
It was interesting to see the kitchen was on the floor above and there was a dump elevator to move the orders from top down and it seemed to work fine. However, half way through our meal we would hear a staff member calling up orders or checking on orders to his colleague on the upper floor. One would think the hotel can afford an intercom!
The menu shows an excellent offering from the traditional pub food to some unique offerings like cornish cod and a wide variety of meat offerings. The prawn cocktail was substantial with plenty of prawns, however, the bed of lettuce it rested upon was too abundant and over shredded. It did however taste divine though they could be served in a wider dish to make it easier to eat out off. The bread that accompanied the prawn cocktail was excellent. The chicken tikka curry was above par with the chicken very tender, but it lacked a bit of edge. The sauce was overwhelmingly tomato based and tasted much like the sauce served with a butter chicken in a restaurant at the other end of town.
Over all Verdict.
Pros:
- Nice open airy place with comfortable seating.
- Wonderful views and outdoor seating.
- Good food.
- Slow service.
- Lack of attention from staff.
- A bit pricey for the quality of food but then perhaps the view commands a higher price.
- Table space for diners needs to be reviewed.
